What types of cases does the Public Defender handle?

The Public Defender represents eligible individuals at all stages of misdemeanor and felony criminal cases, and in certain summary cases, including pretrial identification procedures, preliminary hearings, pretrial motions, trials, post-trial proceedings, sentencing proceedings, probation and parole violation hearings, bail reduction hearings and extradition hearings. The Public Defender also provides counsel to juveniles in all phases of juvenile delinquency matters. In addition, the Public Defender represents individuals facing mental health commitment.

How do I apply for a Public Defender?

Complete the application and bring all documents necessary from the checklist provided on the website. Once your application has been processed with the necessary documents, you will receive a letter stating whether or not you have been approved, and if so, the attorney’s name and contact information.

Do I have to pay for a Public Defender?

No. The Public Defender is responsible for furnishing legal counsel for any person who, for lack of sufficient funds, is unable to obtain legal counsel.
